Latest Tariff Update – September 2026
Effective September 8, 2026, the Government of Canada imposed counter-tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on select products imported from the United States. Individual product rates are based on the corresponding U.S. tariff applied to the same goods.
The measures cover $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S. and include products in sectors such as steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics and electronics.
Businesses are encouraged to review the Government of Canada’s complete product list to determine whether their imported goods are affected.

Canada–U.S. trade conditions continue to evolve, with new tariff measures affecting businesses and supply chains.
Regional Tariff Response Initiative
Eligible Southern Ontario businesses may access up to $3 million in non-repayable funding, including up to $2 million for demonstrated liquidity needs. Funding can also support business pivots, productivity improvements, resilience and capital investment.
Ontario Together Fund
Support for eligible Ontario businesses impacted by trade disruptions to strengthen capacity, build local supply chains and expand market reach.
Protect Ontario Financing Program
Financing support for businesses experiencing significant tariff-related disruptions.

On March 4, 2025, Canada implemented 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, with plans to expand these tariffs to $125 billion in imports.
On April 15, 2025, the Government of Canada has introduced new measures to support businesses impacted by U.S. tariffs:
- Remission Program for Automakers: Automakers that maintain production and investment in Canada can now import a limited number of U.S.-assembled vehicles tariff-free.
- Large Enterprise Tariff Loan Facility: Now open for applications, this program offers financial support to large businesses affected by tariffs. Learn more.
- 6-Month Tariff Relief: Temporary relief for goods used in Canadian manufacturing, food packaging, health care, and national security to help businesses adjust supply chains.
More federal support is expected in the coming weeks.
On April 7, 2025, the Province announced they will deferring select provincially administered taxes for six months:
- April 1, 2025, to October 1, 2025, giving businesses and job creators approximately $9 billion worth of cash flow they need to keep workers employed and weather the economic turmoil. All deferred taxes owed must be paid by October 1, 2025.
On April 16, 2025, the Province has introduced the Protect Ontario through Free Trade within Canada Act to make it easier for businesses to grow across provincial borders. Key highlights include:
- Reducing labour mobility barriers for certified workers across Canada
- Faster onboarding for health professionals coming to Ontario
- A new “Buy Ontario, Buy Canadian” Day to support local businesses
- New trade agreements with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
- A $50M Ontario Together Trade Fund to help businesses scale operations and re-shore supply chains - Learn more about the fund and how to apply.
📄 Read the full announcement.The Ontario government has launched the Protect Ontario Financing Program to help businesses manage tariff-related disruptions from U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos.The program offers term loans to support working capital needs, including:
- Payroll
- Lease payments
- Utility costs
Businesses can combine this funding with other provincial support programs for existing approved projects, but not for new applications.
The Ontario government is investing $70 million in expanded training and employment services to support workers impacted by U.S. tariffs and policies.
- $20M for POWER Centres – providing training, upskilling, and employment services for workers at risk of layoffs.
- $50M for Better Jobs Ontario – offering up to $35,000 for tuition, transportation, and childcare to help job seekers access in-demand training programs.
