Jesse from Tilt Skateboard Shop tells us about his passion for skateboarding and the dream to open his own business.
Tell us about your business.
Tilt Skateboard Shop is a retail store that provides customers with authentic and unique skateboards as well as accessories geared toward both beginner and avid skateboarders.
We also carry a wide variety of clothing and footwear.
We are open Tuesday to Friday from 12 pm - 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm. Closed on Monday
Tell us about you, why did you decide to open your own business?
I made a promise to myself when I was 13 years that I would one day open my own skateboard shop and after 30 years, I finally brought my dream to fruition.
As a youth, I found solace in skateboarding. It was always me against myself and it constantly challenged me to become better as a skateboarder and an individual. Learning different tricks, skating with friends, and being with like-minded individuals allowed me to share this passion with others.
I worked in skateboard shops through my teen years and although I may not have skated as often into my adult years I still continued to pay attention to the sport and never lost the love and passion for it.
Why is this a good opportunity in Caledon?
I have been a resident of Bolton for many years and although there are many amazing small businesses that cater to the community, we haven't had a skate shop in over 20 years that is geared for skaters who often take advantage of our community skatepark.
I wanted to provide an opportunity for people that often use the skatepark and also for those who may not know about skateboarding to have easy access to skateboarding products in our community.
The business will not only be advantageous for Bolton/Caledon residents but also for people throughout York and Peel Regions as there are no skate shops within an hour of here.
Do you still get on your skateboard?
Although I don't skate as well as I used to, I still love getting on my board, it reignites my passion that I had when I was 13. I now have the opportunity to teach this skill to my kids and it is quite nostalgic.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice that I carry with me is "care about people and care about yourself while always learning something new every day!"
